Statistics indicate that 1 out of every 5 Iraq/Afghanistan veterans is subject to experience post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI) and/or major depression. Misconceptions of common hidden disabilities can often lead to workplace disruption, stigmatization, stereotypes, increased absenteeism, decreased productivity, substance abuse, high turnover, expensive litigation and other problems. Mental health related issues cost the American economy more losses than all physical illnesses. While employing transitioning veterans and people with disabilities is considered an altruistic and patriotic endeavor, it is critical that employers ask themselves the following questions:
1. Has our organization provided diversity awareness training that communicates the nature of hidden disabilities including combat related health conditions?
2. Have we developed a strategic plan to provide reasonable workplace accommodations for certain mental health challenges including PTSD and TBI?
3. Do we know the appropriate resources to provide a person experiencing an adjustment crisis, suicidal thoughts, substance abuse or a mental health problem?
4. Does our organization do enough to show value and appreciation for veterans and people with disabilities?
5. Are there factors within our workplace environment that may inadvertently exacerbate certain medical conditions?
6. Is our employment culture and environment disability and veteran friendly? This program will bring awareness to combat related mental and physical health challenges experienced by transitioning veterans and other people with disabilities.
It will cover best practice strategies designed to help employers better accommodate people with hidden disabilities, reduce liability, ensure productivity and increase retention. You will also learn the virtues of hiring veterans, resources to recruit transitioning veterans and the business case for creating a 'disability friendly' workplace environment
