Black Lives Matter – Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace

The death of George Floyd several weeks ago has sparked outrage and brought distress to many communities, Black communities in particular. A lot of individuals and organizations are now finding themselves grappling with how to take care of themselves and the people around them. Given this current environment, how should HR professionals help their Employees and organizations navigate these sensitive issues? What do you need to do as a leader in your organization to support your Black Employees and help other Employees and leaders do the same? About the Speakers:

Michael Pierce is an associate with Vandeventer Black, a business and litigation law firm based in Norfolk. Michael’s practice includes matters involving labor and employment law, as well as and commercial and civil litigation. He regularly defends employers in state and federal court, and also defends matters before the EEOC, the National Labor Relations Board, and the Virginia Employment Commission. Michael also currently serves as the Legislative and Legal Counsel to the HRVirginia State Council.
Michael is listed as a Virginia Super Lawyers Rising Star and is ranked among Virginia Business Magazine’s “Legal Elite.” He is a past recipient of the Old Dominion Bar Association President’s Award, as well as the South Hampton Roads Bar Association’s Young Lawyer of the Year Award.
Michael is a graduate of Christopher Newport University and the Regent University School of Law.

Dr. Karen Hills Pruden is a dual-preneur professional. She is the Chief Human Resources Officer for Norfolk State University, an 85 year old Historically Black College and University. She is also known as the Career Elevation Expert for women middle managers aspiring to C-Suite positions through her business, Pruden Global Business Solutions Consulting. She has been recognized by the governor of Virginia for her work in equity, diversity, and inclusion. She is a Certified Diversity Executive, a 6-time author, with 2 books reaching #1 on Amazon Bestsellers List. Her publication expected this summer, is titled Pruden Principles: 10 Strategies to Propel Women to the C-Suite. Dr. Pruden has 20+ years’ experience in human resource leadership. A community involved leader, Dr. Karen Hills Pruden is the President of the Virginia Beach NAACP, the largest city in the Virginia commonwealth.

Sharon E. Harrington, CPTD, works with leaders to cultivate workplace cultures where employees are empowered with foundational skills for self-navigating through uncomfortable workplace situations that can be costly when simply evaded. She has spent over 27 years investigating workplace charges of discrimination under EEOC protection and now teaches HR professionals to investigate such complaints. She is the founder of Amediate, LLC in Norfolk, VA.
